Class 1 - Pathways Training Program

Total Hours: 137 (or 125 without Air Brakes)
  • Online - 40 hours (in classroom with instructor add $700.00)
    • Prerequisite to Class 1 Pathways Training Program.
    • To access the 40-hour online training course go to Alberta.ca and create an account.
    • Log back in and search for driver.training.alberta.ca.
    • You will have to pay a $250 tuition fee.
    • The knowledge test can be taken at any Alberta Registry location for $17 (you can start core training prior to completing the knowledge test).
  • Core Program - 72 hours
    • 4 hours of classroom training
    • 43 hours of driving time
    • 3 hours of off-road maneuvers (hook/unhook, backing)
    • 10 hours of in-yard training (equipment inspection)
    • 12 hours Air Brake Course (8 hours in class + 4 hour practical; including 0.5 hour lunch and two 0.25 hour coffee breaks)
  • Unrestricted License Competency Building Program - 17-25 Hours of Additional Training
    • 3 hours in the yard (equipment inspection)
    • 14-22 hours in-cab

Total Costs
Core Program (Restricted License): $8,750.00
Add Class Instructor: +$700.00
Upgrade to Unrestricted: +$2,250.00

This price includes the use of tractor-trailer unit for the 2-hour Government road test.

Class 1 - Experience and Equipment Equivalency

Total Hours: 40 (Restricted License) or 57-65 (Unrestricted License)
Prerequisite: Air Brakes Course
  • Core Program - 40 hours
    • 3.5 hours of classroom training
    • 28.5 hours of in-vehicle training
    • 8 hours of in-yard training (equipment inspection)
  • Unrestricted License Competency Building Program - 17-25 Hours
    • 3 hours in the yard (equipment inspection)
    • 14-22 hours in-cab

Total Costs
Restricted Program: $4,000.00
Unrestricted Program: $6,250.00

This price includes the use of tractor-trailer unit for the 2-hour Government road test.
Note: this course requires a valid Class 3 license with 2 years of verified Class 3 experience. The student must apply to the government to have experience verified.

Class 1 - Farm-restricted License

Total Hours: Total Hours: 50 (Restricted License) or 67-75 (Unrestricted License)
  • 30 hours of in-vehicle, in-yard and off-road training
  • 8 hours of classroom training
  • 12 hours Air Brake Course (8 hours in class + 4 hour practical; including 0.5 hour lunch and two 0.25 hour coffee breaks)

  • After 12-months you will need to take the 17-25 Hour Class 1 Competence Building Program to have provincial restrictions removed

Upgrade to Unrestricted: +$2,250.00

Class 3 - Automatic or Manual Transmission

Total Hours: 41
  • 7 hours of classroom training
  • 12 hours of one-on-one driving
  • 5 hours in-yard training (equipment inspection)
  • 5 hours off-road maneuvering and tasks
  • 12 hours Air Brake Course (8 hours in class + 4 hour practical; including 0.5 hour lunch and two 0.25 hour coffee breaks)

Manual Transmission
With Air Brake: $3,000.00
Without Air Brake: $2,750.00

Automatic Transmission
With Air Brake: $2,750.00
Without Air Brake: $2,500.00

Price includes the use of tractor unit for the Government Road Test.

Air Brakes

Total Hours: 12
  • 8 hours of classroom training includes:
    • 7 hours in class
    • 0.5 hour lunch
    • Two 0.25 hour coffee breaks
  • 4 hour practical includes:
    • 2.75 hours of demonstration
    • 0.75 hours in-cab practice practical test
    • 0.25 hours in-cab practical air brake test
    • 0.25 hours in-cab retest (when required on different day)

Total Costs: $250.00

Total Hours: 8
  • Review of NSC Standard 10
  • Securement devices
  • WLL (Working Load Limit)
  • Proper use of tiedowns
  • Unmarked tiedowns
  • Anchor points
  • Insecure objects
  • Cargo placement and restraint
  • Minimum number of tiedowns
  • Commodity specific requirements
  • Hands-on using securement equipment strap, chain and edge protection

$55.00 Registration Fee Per Person
$75.00/Hour and $0.64/Kilometer for Travel Outside of Calgary

Course completion certificates are issued per student.

Professional Driver Evaluation

  • Pre-trip inspection on power unit
  • Proper hook-up procedure/Couple trailer
  • Pre-trip inspection on trailer
  • Test drive includes intersection, turning, vehicle efficiency, attitude, braking, slowing, stopping, speed, passing, changing lanes and overall ability for safety
  • Backing / 90-degree blind side back-in
  • Proper decouple procedure post trip

School Equipment:
2-Hour Class 1 Evaluation: $260.00
1.5-Hour Class 3 Evaluation: $195.00

Customer Equipment:
2-Hour Class 1 Evaluation: $200.00

Outside of Calgary Travel:
$75.00/Hour and $0.64/Kilometer
